Freezing Rain

I heard the winter rain

Sounding like thunder on the roof

Startling me from my slumber

And I drug myself from my warm cocoon

And trudged off to face the weather and the day

Looking back longingly at you still sleeping

And I opened the door

and the shock of cold air

Stole my breath away

I tried to open the car door

found it frozen shut

Felt the frustration mount

Flew back inside to shake you awake

And you came to my aid

My aging knight in shining armor

Patiently pouring hot water cup by cup

Until the door seemed to magically open

And I drove off in the frozen dawn

Seeing you wave goodbye to me in the rear view mirror

And my heart filled with love

And my heart filled with gratitude

Seeing you there watching me leave

Making sure I was safe

In the aftermath of freezing rain
