Hard Things

Time stood still

As the doctor delivered

The fateful diagnosis

The world changed

From light to dark

As a wet fog descended

Making it hard to see

Any way of escape

Hard things happen

Inexplicably

Irrevocably

And the future you plan

Turns into a mirage

Leaving in its wake

A brutal reality

Dealing with pain

Dealing with disease

Dealing with depression

Your body

Is now your enemy

Attacking itself

An autoimmune disorder

Incurable and progressive

Hard things happen

But strong people

Do hard things

Refuse to accept defeat

Replace the fog

With clarity

Replace fear

With faith and hope

Believing that

Miracles do happen

Strong people

Know hard things

Test your mettle

Challenge your belief

In God

But they persevere

They battle on

Carving light

out of darkness

Carving joy

Out of tribulation

Carving courage

Out of despair

Carving a life

Out of hard things.
