Heat Wave

Sizzling Texas sun beats down everywhere

Waves of heat shimmer in the summer air.

The summer inferno has arrived at last.

100 degree temperatures bake grass so fast

Like an oven crisping the foliage brown.

Water bills rage as humanity leaves town.

Fighting sun rays with sprinklers and hose,

Gallons of sunscreen protecting kids noses,

Children seek refuge from the heat filled air,

Playing games in air conditioned bedroom chairs.

Teens binge on Netflix glued to screens

Seeking solace by any means

Pools for the fortunate feel like bath water

Providing little escape for sons and daughters ,

As indoors becomes a refuge and a retreat,

From the raging temper of summer heat.
