Reclaiming Student Agency

Student’s faces light up with interest and joy:

It’s like they’ve been given a brand new toy.

They read the books THEY have chosen to read;

They talk with book groups, rush to seats with speed.

They willingly spend the time after school is done,

Working on digital compositions- having such fun.

They take out novels and begin to create

A script which will mirror the character’s fate.

They act out book scenes but move the setting,

So involved in the process, time they’re forgetting.

They meet in writing groups, and they write

Poetry songs and essays about character’s plights.

They each bring a new poem that they share-

Such authentic engagement used to be rare.

They each read another book that a character might choose;

They each find a TED Talk a characters might use,

They read and they write, and then they discuss,

Learning from each other- not just from us.

They reclaim their agency, drive their own learning:
