The Things We Cling To

We cling to hopes

We cling to dreams

Desperate to stay afloat

When life comes apart at the seams

We cling to love

We cling to hate

Although different choices

Bring us different fates

We cling to life

To stave off death

We cling to youth

With bated breath

We cling to money

We cling to possessions

Until these desires

Become obsessions

We cling to addictions

Crave how they make us feel

But instead we lose touch

With what is true and real

But the things we cling to

Weigh us down

Mill stones that sink us

And make us drown

So cling to god

And cling to belief

For only faith

Will bring your soul relief
