Unhappy Valentines Day

He threw the candy in the trash-

The roses went there too.

His heart exploding from his chest,

He hadn’t had a clue.

The ring was in his pocket-

Alongside his hopes and dreams.

He wished this day had gone differently,

But it came apart at the seams.

She had said she didn’t love him:

Didn’t want him in her life.

She wanted freedom to choose her destiny

Which was NOT to be his wife.

She had looked at him with pity.

He had picked up the ring, his keys and phone.

He muttered, “happy Un Valentine’s Day,”

Resigning himself to being alone.
